[ARCHIVED] May is the Month for Safety Awareness

With the warmer weather comes all of the outdoor activities and events that make summer fun. Everyone is outside partaking in everything from water sports and boating to cookouts and campfires. Unfortunately, many of these activities, while fun also bring an increased risk for injury and illness. Every year the Dinwiddie Division of Fire & EMS sees a definite increase in the number of trauma and medical calls related to summer outdoor activities.

In the month of May, we would just like to ask citizens to stop and think about the things that can happen with many of the outdoor activities and to review some of the things you can do to keep yourself and family safe. Most safety rules and precautions only take a few extra minutes to follow and can be life saving.

The month of May has also been designated as the National awareness or recognition time for many of these activities. Some of these include:

• National Water Safety Month
• National Bike Safety Month
• National Safe Boating Week (May 18-24)
• National EMS Week (May 19-25)
• National Stroke Awareness Month
